Sony won’t drop the price of older PS3 models

New slimmer PS3 won’t make the old stuff cheaper

The reveal of a new, sleeker SKU usually means that the archaic, older model is due for a price drop. Sony, however, is to such expectations as Ms. Friz is to that boy who just wants a normal field trip. Previous PS3 systems are not due to get cheaper in the wake of the slimmer one

“There’s no price drop formally,” SCEA VP John Koller told Engadget. “But the thing that’s been happening in the market over the last year or so is that there’s been so many retail price promotions, and so many different gift card offers and all those things, being done by all of us (Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony), that we’ve heard from our consumer, ‘Enough with all these weird price moves. What we really want is content and games and value.'”

I love publisher spin, and this is Sony at its finest. Presenting a fixed price point as something consumers are demanding, like refusing to reduce the cost is a favor to us all. Thank you, Sony! Your desire to make more money is an inspiration to philanthropists everywhere.

Seriously though, Black Friday’s coming up. Methinks we won’t need Sony to drop that price between now and the end of the year.
