Tencent and Activision bring Call of Duty Online to China

A new agreement between Activision Blizzard and Chinese ISP Tencent will bring Call of Duty Online to Chinese gamers. COD Online has been in development for two years now, designed specifically for the Chinese market. When it’s done it will bring free-to-play multiplayer action with weapon and character customization to tens of millions of players. An in-game store will let players enhance their gear and weapons, as well as nab perks created specifically for this market.

Tencent, under a multi-year agreement with Activision Blizzard, will have an exclusive license to operate Call of Duty Online in mainland China. They’ll make money from microtransactions, of course.

“We are very excited about our relationship with Tencent and the opportunities for gaming in China,” said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard.  “We think China is one of the most exciting places in the world for us to grow our business and to develop innovative new games.”

The game’s website is all smoky and teaser-y. The trailer, above, looks crazy.

If they do this right, Activision could rule the world with the money they’ll make.
