“NUads,” Microsoft’s attempt at leveraging Kinect to allow for interactive advertisements, are coming to Xbox Live later this fall. For the time being, here’s a quick look at a few of the spots that will make use of voice and gesture controls. At least now we know what to expect and attempt to avoid.

The examples on display look to be rudimentary, but I can entertain the idea that ads made specifically with Kinect in mind could, in theory, be interesting if done properly. Of course, advertisements on the whole are pretty crummy these days. Let’s face it: this is probably just going to be an extension of that.

Consumer engagement is what seemingly everyone is after right now, which should help to explain the context behind something like NUads and why it came to fruition. I can’t help but be reminded of how I never tell Hulu which ads I prefer over others. Interactivity is fine and all, but first your campaign needs to actually be compelling enough to get me to, well, interact.
