Apple announces Retina display for new MacBook Pro

The rumors were true. The latest Apple notebook, one they’re calling the next-generation MacBook Pro, is thinner than ever (0.71 inches thin, 4.46 lbs), and just as expensive as ever. No surprises there, on either point. The big news is that the display is one of what Apple calls a Retina Display, meaning that it’s rocking 4 times the resolution of a standard notebook screen.

The resolution on the starting 15″ model is spec’d at 2880 x 1800, or 220ppi. They’re currently reworking all of their apps to take advantage of this super high resolution, but one of the teased games at today’s WWDC presentation was Diablo III. Imagine this game at this resolution!

This machine will be able to do some decent gaming with its up to 2.7 GHz Core i7 and up to 16GB of RAM. The graphics chip has been updated to the respectable Kepler GT 650M. All of these machines are SSD-only (up to 768GB), and will not sport optical drives at all. Oh, and USB 3.0 is finally supported.

Pricing starts at $2,199 for the base model (2.3GHz, 8GB RAM, 256GB storage), and Apple will offer these for sale later today.
