We’ve come full circle, folks. Once upon a time, video game adaptations of all sorts of movies were quite a popular thing, and even in cases where it wasn’t a direct adaptation, movies tended to have a lot of cultural influence over the gaming world, so much so that we’d get a lot of film-inspired characters, scenes, dialogues, and so on.
But now, according to Tom Holland, it’s video games that are making a tremendous influence on movies, specifically related to the new Spider-Man movie that took a lot of inspiration from Insomniac’s takes on the character.
As IGN writes, Holland commented on what the movie took from Insomniac’s Spider-Man games while on the red carpet at Brand New Day‘s July 27 premiere. “A lot of the action. A lot of the finishing moves. I was actually playing the game last night,” Holland told IGN.
“I couldn’t sleep last night, I was so excited about today. I was trying to figure out what I was going to do, and I was like, ‘I’ll just throw the game on and have some fun.’ For me, a lot of those finishing moves, a lot of our stuff, was influenced by that,” he said.
Furthermore, IGN reveals that, apparently, many people in the action and stunt departments were “huge gamers,” and from what fans have been posting, it would seem that they are really big fans of Insomniac’s Spidey. There’s a scene in the trailer where Peter backflips off a building in a manner nigh identical to how Spider-Man does it in Insomniac’s titles.
Several other scenes seem to have been directly inspired by the game as well.
So far, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has been faring well with critics, having achieved a 7.1 average score and a 90 percent Rotten Tomatoes score. Those are some mighty good numbers for a popcorn superhero flick, but also on track with the rest of Holland’s Spider-Man movies that’ve maintained relatively solid quality ever since the first of them came out in 2017.
