Man buys virtual sword for unreleased game, pays $16,000

A man in China has spent $16,000 buying a digital sword for a game that hasn’t been released. Age of Wulin, an MMORPG from Snail Games, held an online auction ahead of release, selling subscription cards and in-game items which sold for obnoxious prices, including the sword.

As well as the $16,000 blade, two weapon sheaths were sold for $1,600 and $2,500. All of this is for a game that won’t even have an open beta until Spring 2012. These fans must have supreme confidence that the MMO in question won’t suck.

I’m not even going to begin wrapping my head around this one. If you try and think about it too hard, you can legitimately feel your brain bleeding.
