Take-Two: New GTA every two years would degrade series

Fans would lose interest otherwise

GameSpot reports that Take-Two’s chief operating officer Karl Slatoff told an audience during the Wedbush Transformational Technologies Conference that releasing a new Grand Theft Auto title every two years would ultimately hurt the franchise.

“Often times people ask us, ‘Why don’t you come out with Grand Theft Auto every two years?,’ Karl stated at the conference. “To us, that doesn’t make sense, because Grand Theft Auto, every single time it comes out, is a brand new experience. You can’t possibly do that in two years. And if we did that, our product would fatigue and the franchise would degrade from a value perspective.”

GameSpot also pointed out that is the general train of thought for the studio in regards to the GTA franchise. Last year, Rockstar North’s Leslie Benzies stated that they “could easily have churned out a new version year after year” but they believe fans would lose interest were that the case.

Outside of sports, the one overly annualized game that instantly comes to mind is the Call of Duty series. Activision did expect Black Ops II to have poorer sales compared to past games, but that may have to do with the industry’s upcoming transition to next-gen consoles more than over saturation. What do you think?
