The unceremonious end of Destiny 2’s development is not being taken lightly by some gamers, especially those who take issue with how a lot of the game’s previous content has been taken away over time.
One of the biggest of many complaints about Destiny 2 over the years is how Bungie often removed old content from the game to make room for new stuff. Playable missions like Destiny 2’s vanilla Red War campaign haven’t been accessible for years. But modders are trying to fix that.
Titled Project Sunrise, this modding effort has begun unlocking a lot of old content, and it’s working to some degree. There’s video proof of it in action, like in the clips above, like Destiny 2’s original Homecoming mission.
The development team, Project Sunrise, calls it an “offline exploration mod,” so you can’t really do too much at all, but that seems to be besides the point. The project seems to have begun in earnest a few weeks ago, but it’s quickly progressing, with even the much-maligned Curse of Osiris DLC missions being tested, as seen in the clip below.
What will come of Project Sunrise in the long run? It’s tough to say, but it’s a bold move in hopes of preserving gaming moments that have been taken away from players, a symptom of the ongoing struggle between physical and digital media.
Destiny 2’s always-online world makes this especially relevant, so although players will likely never be able to truly play old content like Red War and Curse of Osiris, they can at least use their PCs to poke around and explore it a little bit like a museum if they really wish to do so.
