Today, Microsoft held a mystery press conference in Los Angeles for a “major announcement” where they just revealed a a new tablet computer that they’re calling Microsoft Surface.

Microsoft boss Steve Ballmer took the stage to show this off to an audience of tech press, where he said that his company is getting behind combining software and hardware for the future of computing. “We wanted to give Windows 8 its own hardware.”

Its 9.3mm thin, but has full-sized USB 2 and HDMI connectors in a full magnesium case that weighs less than 600 grams, or 1.5 lbs. It features a 10.6-inch Gorilla Glass 2-covered display on the front and a built in stand in the back, with front and rear cameras to boot. And there’s a magnetic cover that snaps on — but the catch here is that the cover is actually a multitouch keyboard.

Sony’s reaction? Hilarious. Check out what faux Kaz Hirai had to say on Twitter. Also check out Balmer Man in our gallery.
