How to craft planks in RuneScape: Dragonwilds

Get this essential resource.

You’d expect wood planks to be easy to find, but RuneScape: Dragonwilds locks them behind a mess of buildings and mechanics. Instead of grabbing them off the ground, you’ll have to craft them. Not sure how? Here’s a quick guide to help you turn logs into planks.

Planks are crafted with the Sawmill, a Crafting station that, surprisingly, isn’t available right away. I assumed something as basic as a Sawmill would unlock within my first 10 hours, but no luck. Eventually, I realized you need to gather Bronze Bars first, which are made from smelting Tin and Copper Ore at the Furnace. Even if you do unlock the recipe, you’ll still need to gather the following resources:

  • 18 Ash Logs
  • 4 Bronze Bars
  • 8 Stone

RuneScape: Dragonwilds’ tutorial phase should’ve pointed you in the right direction for the Ash Logs and Stone. While it’ll take a while to gather the amount required for the Sawmill, you can utilize spells such as Rocksplosion and Axtral Projection. The area containing Bronze Bars recommends Level 3 gear, so expect enemies around that rank. You can try sneaking in if you’re under-leveled, but you’ll probably get caught in a fight. Bring a bow or whatever weapon you’re most comfortable with to handle any trouble that comes your way.

Once you’ve gathered all the necessary resources, head over to the Build menu and navigate to the Crafting section. From there, you’ll be able to place down the Sawmill, finally unlocking the ability to turn basic wood into usable planks. It’s a big step forward in your progression, opening the door to new recipes, structures, and upgrades that rely on this essential material. From this point on, you’ll be spending a fair bit of time feeding logs into the Sawmill, so get comfy and keep that wood stockpile coming.

The Ash Planks will be the very first recipe you’ll unlock after you’ve acquired the Sawmill. This item is used in multiple recipes, including the Tanner’s Kit’s Hard Leather upgrade. You can also build the Loom, which lets you thread in textiles and cloths for more gear enhancements.

Alongside those two recipes, the Cooking Range becomes available once you snag your first Ash Plank. This station lets you cook up hearty meals or sizzle raw meat for some much-needed sustenance. As you progress, more wood types will start to appear, like Blightwood, which unlocks additional plank recipes. You can also toss any plank into the Kiln to produce Charcoal, but honestly, I recommend sticking with regular logs. Save your premium planks for the good stuff.

Fortunately, planks aren’t essential for building your base, as starter homes only require logs. Therefore, you can focus on gathering wood without worrying about crafting planks early on. If you are looking for more RuneScape: Dragonwilds resource tips, check out our Vault Shard guide.
