YoYo offers GameMaker Studio Standard Edition for free

A $50 savings

The newest version of GameMaker Studio has been released to Steam today and brings with it a little something extra for those interested in making their own games. The “Standard Edition” of the software lifts resource restrictions present in the free version, making it a much more functional tool for making games. Normally sold for $49.99, the upgrade will be offered free for a limited time.

Actually getting the upgrade seems to require a bit of effort and patience. To install it, you’ll first have to install GameMaker Studio through Steam, then opt in to the beta (by selecting beta from the properties menu within Steam). Upon launching the beta version, you’ll be given the opportunity to upgrade for free by submitting an e-mail address to which a license key (and future marketing materials) can be sent.

Right now, it seems like the servers are getting hammered, as I’ve had no success in getting GameMaker Studio to accept my recently-acquired license key. I’ll keep trying, though. I like GameMaker, from what little experience I have with it, and had already planned to upgrade my version when I decided I needed to.
