You can watch Pokemon: Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution on Netflix in February

I’m already dreading That Scene

I wasn’t planning to watch Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution this year (or any year, for that matter!), but now that the movie is coming to Netflix on February 27, 2020, I’ll struggle to say no.

If you saw Pokémon: The First Movie in the late-’90s, you know what’s up. Evolution might have a radically different style – so much so that it’s freaky to look at Ash and co. – but it’s still a remake.

“When researchers discover and exploit a fossil of the Mythical Pokémon Mew, they unleash a creation that goes against the very laws of nature: Mewtwo, a Legendary Pokémon intended for use as a tool of destruction,” reads the familiar-sounding plot summary for Evolution. “But as Mewtwo becomes aware of its own dubious origin, it begins to resent its human creators and seeks revenge.”

It’s all coming back to me now – especially the Pikachu-on-Pikachu slapfest and the tear-shedding. If I’m being honest, my favorite part of the original was the lead-in short, Pikachu’s Vacation. I haven’t seen Pokémon: The First Movie since the VHS days, but it left quite an impression on me as a kid.

Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution will be a global Netflix exclusive outside of Japan and Korea.
