You can play Umbrella Corps for free on Steam this weekend (but you really shouldn’t)

Unless you just gotta crawl fast

Curiosity has gotten the better of me. I’m among the less than 70 people on PC currently playing Umbrella Corps, Capcom’s fast-crawling multiplayer-centric take on Resident Evil that saw a commercial release for some reason. That’s sub-70 players, despite a Steam free weekend happening right now.

And that’s no fluke. According to SteamDB — which isn’t perfectly accurate but is accurate enough for this sort of thing — the all-time peak for Umbrella Corps is 421 simultaneous players. 421. The hell?

I’d expect a low figure like that for an under-the-radar multiplayer-only indie title shortly after release, not this year’s one new, non-re-release Resident Evil game (even if it is an obviously lower-appeal spin-off). Like, we know it’s a bad game by any standard, but it’s also kind of funny. Unintentionally, I mean. I assumed it would have gotten more sympathy-laugh plays, if nothing else. Guess not!

Anyway, Umbrella Corps is free to download and roll around in until Sunday at 12:00pm Pacific. I should’ve listened to Zack and scrolled right on past it, but didn’t. Now you can do the same.

I wonder if there’s a similar post in store for Metal Gear Survive next year.
