Yoshi’s Woolly World is such a happy game

I’m about halfway through Yoshi’s Woolly World and I am so grateful to have a dedicated co-op partner. There’s this intoxicating contrast between the cute, handcrafted aesthetic and our innate desire to screw one another over as much as possible while still making tangible progress. (Did you need to hog all of the hearts? You have full health! And stop turning me into an egg!)

It isn’t a challenging game — not that I’ve seen yet, anyway, aside from the bonus levels unlocked by finding hidden collectibles — but not every platformer needs to be brutal. Sometimes, you just want to drift away in a happy place free of frustration. That’s Woolly World.

Level 1-7, Clawdaddy Beach, is when it all started to come together for me. Yoshi turns into a motorcycle, for starters, and those foam-covered crustaceans from Yoshi’s Island are back as purses with protruding claws and eyes. Best of all, though, is the music. Oh my goodness.

=)
