A very awkward but equally wise soldier once said, “I think at any time, any place, people can fall in love with each other.” Two Final Fantasy XIV players proved this little nugget of wisdom true this week, when their in-game union blossomed into real-life nuptials.
The happy couple, known on X as 404Eules and Koyuka28, started as best friends who shared a passion for Final Fantasy XIV. As they explored Eorzea together, they eventually decided to get married. They didn’t do it to roleplay as a married couple; they did it for in-game perks.
Marrying another player in Final Fantasy XIV (in-game, “entering an eternal bond”) can be complicated, but it comes with plenty of perks. Chief among them are the Eternity Rings, a pair of in-game wedding rings that let one player teleport to the other’s location whenever they like. FFXIV players often marry purely to get an Eternity Ring, and Eules and Koyuka28 were no exception. At first.
Once Eules and Koyuka28 had their Eternity Rings, I can only assume they went back to being friends who played Final Fantasy XIV for a while, using their in-game marriage magic to cut down on travel time. But eventually, their friendship grew into something deeper, and they decided the two wanted to spend the rest of their lives together.
By all accounts, the ceremony that followed was a love letter to the game that brought them together. To symbolize their in-game union crossing over into the real world, Eules and Koyuka28 commissioned, or were given, a pair of Soul Crystals (unique trinkets that let players upgrade their character class abilities) representing their in-game classes, Paladin and Dragoon. To no one’s surprise, the final products are beautiful.
Since word of Eules and Koyuka28’s union hit social media, the happy couple seem to have become minor celebrities within the Final Fantasy XIV community. Fellow FFXIV fans are coming together to wish the newlyweds well. Perhaps the greatest show of support came from none other than Jason Carles Miller, the singer/songwriter who lent his voice to several of FFXIV’s most popular songs, including “Close in the Distance, which just happened to play at Eules and Koyuka28’s wedding.
If Eules and/or Koyuka28 are reading this article, here’s a big old congratulations from the rest of the Destructoid crew and me! May your lives, real and virtual, be filled with love, laughter, and sick loot.
