A new XCOM is on the way, and we’re all going to have to deal with the fact that it’s a first-person-shooter. Boo! While many have already been turned off, those brave souls still interested in 2K Marin’s upcoming bastardization of the series have some new gameplay details to read, courtesy of Official Xbox Magazine.

Players take on the role of Carter, an FBI agent with the obligatory “checkered past” who needs to pick up missions in Kansas and Arizona (among other places) in real-time. Essentially, choosing some missions may cause you to miss out on others, due to time sensitivity.

In the game section OXM saw, Carter goes to a spooky town to investigate a case of “swarming insects” that may be indicating a crucial new source of energy, Elerium. XCOM‘s missions structure is such that if you want to just partially complete a mission and abandon it for a new one, you can. Leaving a job half-done could cause players to miss out, however.

The first enemy encountered was a poisonous glob of alien goo, which was taken out with a shotgun, and Carter also has access to a wide range of high-tech gadgetry and the occasional AI ally from the FBI. 2K says every mission will play differently, too. Sounds like a very open and varied game in theory. Kind of promising, despite the huge deviation from what XCOM fans want to see.
