X’07: Hunting down Canadian videogame bloggers

Recommended Videos

Forgive me Niero for saying this, but … there is only one thing I hate about writing for Destructoid and that is the fact that I am the one and only writer from Canada. It’s incredibly lonely up here when I have no one to hang out with from the blogging world.

Do you know I have to pin down random strangers at work just so I can talk about things like BioShock and Heroes of Mana?  People look at me like I should working in the basement of the office building with the rest of the IT “rejects.”

Luckily for me, I managed to find a whole group — a bundle if you will — of Canadian (and best of all) Niagara region gaming bloggers at X’07 on Tuesday. Yes, there are other Canadians out there that like to spend all their free time blogging and podcasting about their favorite thing in life: Videogames.

The first group I came across were the team from This Week in Geek, who do a weekly podcast about anything and everything geek. This geeky group comprised of Steve aka Snowball, Mike aka Birdman, Pierce aka The Punk and Brandon aka MacGyver managed to do a video during the blackout at X’07. They probably had the only working gaming device in the building.

Cosbytron, Johnny Wadd and I did manage to find some working games on our quest for food.

The second group I planned on finding from the get-go was the gang from Bits, Bytes, Pixels and Sprites.com, Jim Squires (seen in the picture below) and Xav De Matos who are also local Niagara region bloggers. When doing my pre-event research for X’07, I had seen that the gang from The BBPS.com was coming to the event as well, and I realized I just had to meet them. Though I’ve had a few bad encounters with Jim in the past, I figured we could let bygones be bygones and have coffee sometime. I plan to interrogate them for information and contacts in the gaming industry.

If Destructoid people are good at only one thing, it’s using our strange sense of humor to make friends, and our ability to drink everyone under the table.
