A new patent from Nintendo Japan shows an accessory that attaches to the Wii Remote to add a touchpad. Why in the hell would we want a touchpad on the end of a Wii Remote? Wouldn’t fisting a remote with one hand to diddle the top end of it with our fingers of the other hand feel a little wierd?

Nintendo suggests that the pad could be used for a drawing game, or as a mouse pointer. I thought that was what the Wii Remote was for.

While I may be missing Nintendo’s vision for this add-on, at least I can appreciate the tech behind it. Siliconera says that it uses mirrors to bounce infrared light from the touchpad into the controller. Your touch is seen as position data. If the pad is not touched, the Wii Remote works as normal.

What do you think about this crazy contraption?
