David Gaider, the brain behind some of BioWare’s best characters, has left the company after 17 years. The announcement was made on his own Twitter earlier today.

Gaider has worked on several BioWare games since 1999 including Baldur’s Gate 2, the classic Neverwinter Nights, Knights of the Old Republic, and of course, Dragon Age. His work is known for its emphasis on character relationships (a now staple of BioWare RPGs) and inclusiveness, prominently representing LGTB characters and themes.

According to an email exchange reported on over at Polygon, the departure was amiable and Gaider’s own decision: “It’s simply time to move onto a new challenge.” No word on what his next project will be. Personally, I’m hoping for a book series starring a smart-mouthed, homicidal, gay droid with nothing left to lose, but that’s probably just me.
