When I tell people (especially new game journos) about the “old E3,” I always point out what a crazy spectacle it was. Thinking of the last good one, E3 2006, my mind recalls images of scantily clad girls pushing their way through a crowd, handing out lollipops. Nerds gathered around standees and posed for pictures. Dozens of GameStop employees tried to look calm and collected, like they were supposed to be there. In the background, skateboarders were flying off ramps and doing tricks in the sky.
It feels like we’re slowly getting back to the craziness of the old E3, and Konami is definitely doing their part this year to make that happen. In honor of their first Mexican video game, Lucha Libre AAA: Heroes del Ring, they’re going to have live Lucha Libre Wrestling matches on the show floor! To me, that’s just as crazy as Tony Hawk and friends flying roof high in ’06 — maybe even more crazy.
What’s cool about the live Lucha Libre wrestling matches is that they’ll decide the cover of a game, which is likely an E3 first. Dr. Wagner (current #1 in the world) and an unnamed #2 will go head to head, with the winner to be on the game’s cover.
Beyond this, people with names like Laredo Kid, Murder Clown, Mini Abismo Negro and more are going to host autograph sessions on the show floor. How crazy is this?
