World of Warcraft drops 1.3 million subscribers

But still has 8.3 million subs, so, yeah

Offering a status update on World of Warcraft during an earnings report, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick revealed that the popular MMORPG lost 1.3 million subscribers during the quarter — “mainly from the East, but in the West as well” — pushing the player base down to 8.3 million paying members as of March 31, 2013.

Amazing to think that WoW originally released in 2004 and despite the rise of free-to-play gaming, hasn’t needed to give in to that business model yet. As a result of the decline, Blizzard plans to put out more frequent content updates and make it easier for those who have stopped playing to transition back into the game.
