Windforge is an RPG mix of Terraria and steampunk

Kill the Skywhales

This weekend at PAX, I came across a booth with just a laptop sitting on a table, and this laptop was running an early build of Snowed In Studios’ Windforge. It’s an open-world role-playing game with an emphasis on building things, very similar to Terraria but with 200% more steampunk.

You’ll be able to mine and knock down everything in the game using a jackhammer, except for one core city. Although there are already hundreds of craftable items, even more are being added as the game develops.

The demo I saw started out with my character on a sky ship, which players will be able to build for themselves. On the ship were crafting stations where I could refine down raw materials that I mined and then assemble into finished tools and building supplies. Mining is fast since it’s done using a jackhammer, so it’s not a huge hassle to gather up resources.

The ship can be flown around anywhere on the giant map, and the planned game world is going to be huge. There are three different levels to the world, all of them set in the sky. The lowest level is filled with poisonous gas and players will have to build air filters before exploring it.

The middle level — where the demo was set — was full of little islands to explore and Skywhales, which are what they sound like: giant whales that fly. These creatures are a source of oil and can be used as fuel.

I am really excited to see more of this game; the concept is a blend of awesome things, and I’m hoping the final result is awesome as well. Simply put, the world needs a game with Skywhales in it. Windforge is planned for release this year and as you might have guessed, Snowed In Studios is trying to get on Steam via Greenlight.
