After last week’s announcements from Nintendo, from where I’m standing, every Wii-related game release pales in comparison to Punch Out!!. Seriously … a new Punch Out!! games guys; it’s all I’ve been thinking about for five days.
I’m trying to find someway to get excited about the WiiWare title Midnight Bowling (Gameloft, 1-4 players, 800 Wii Points), but it’s tough. I’m sure the game’s career mode is as “immersive” as they say it is, but unless I’m playing a game of 8-ball with Von Kaiser, I’m skeptical.
The other WiiWare title being releases is an original puzzler called MadStone (Riverman Media, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points). The game actually looks pretty wild — breaking blocks to make a clear path for your “madstone” to reach the bottom of the screen — despite the obvious lack of Piston Honda. Then again, I’m a sucker for block-breaking puzzlers, so Riverman Media may already have my eight dollars and I don’t know it.
Virtual Console gets its updates as well, this week with the excellent Nintendo 64 version of Mario Golf (1-4 players, 1000 Wii Points) and Shining Force II (Sega Genesis, 1 player, 800 Wii Points). I apologize to all of you RPG-fanatics for listing Shining Force II as “more” in the headline of this post; don’t hurt me.
