Why Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem is light on the SMT, Fire Emblem

Well, I don’t know why it’s light on the SMT

Yesterday’s peek at Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem raised as many questions as it did fanboy squeals. A new blog today (with somewhat differing translations between Siliconera and Mystic of Traduko Soft) answers and raises further questions.

It comes from producer Shinjiro Takada, known for the Devil Survivor series, and is for what in the west is being referred to as, “Shin Megami Tensei & Fire Emblem Crossover Project,” but in Japan loses the SMT name for “Illusory Revelations ♯ Fire Emblem.”

And while the SMT branding seems absent, so too does a Fire Emblem feel. Takada explains that, “if the development of this title conforms with the original [series], then Intelligent Systems should handle it. If Atlus are going to develop it, then it would be best to make it into the kind of title that Atlus specializes in” (with a slightly alternate translation here).

While it doesn’t seem to be explicitly an SMT game, it does seem like it will skew towards Atlus’ style — “Realistic characters who suffer from many conflicts and worries in modern-day Japan” —  rather than be a more rote, by the numbers crossover. Takada notes we might feel the Fire Emblem essence more strongly in further updates.
