In Genshin Impact, Sand Grease Pupae are a local specialty of Sumeru found only in the Desert of Hadramaveth. Here’s where to find all 74 Sand Grease Pupae in the open world of Teyvat.
Sand Grease Pupa locations and farming route
Sand Grease Pupae can be found in the northern part of the Sumeru desert, where the landscape swirls into a large spiraling formation with a sandstorm at its center. They look like gray egg-shaped objects partially buried in the sand. Having Tighnari in your party will mark their locations on your minimap, and Nahida can gather them from afar using her hold Skill.
The cluster of pupae to the east are all underground. You can access the cave network by teleporting to the City of the Deceased domain, dropping into the Setekh Wenut arena, or using the teleporter south of the Setekh Wenut and walking south. There are multiple levels to this tunnel system, so use the multi-layered map function if you get lost.
Of the underground Sand Grease Pupae, the cluster furthest to the south is accessed via using the teleporter and walking south into the cave. The cluster of pupae around the domain is on the level below the domain; teleport to the domain and drop down into the hole in front of it. (If you don’t see a hole, walk around the tunnels until the ground falls away beneath you.) The rest of the pupae can be accessed by walking from the Setekh Wenut arena.
Where to buy Sand Grease Pupa
There are currently no NPCs who sell Sand Grease Pupae, and they cannot be farmed in your teapot. The only way to obtain these local specialties is by scouring the open world.
How to use Sand Grease Pupa
Sand Grease Pupae are used to Ascend certain characters. As of Version 4.7, there are only two characters who use Sand Grease Pupae for their Ascensions. These characters are Alhaitham and Dehya.
You will need 168 Sand Grease Pupae in total to fully Ascend one character. Since local specialties take 48 hours to respawn, and there are only 74 pupae in the overworld, you will need to clean your world out just over two times over the course of six days. If you’re in a rush, you can ask a friend (or a kind stranger) if you can take the Sand Grease Pupae in their world.
There are no cooking or crafting recipes that require Sand Grease Pupae.
