Well dang, the Dark Souls board game crowdfunded half a million dollars real quick

Met its $70,000 goal in three minutes and just kept on going

I imagine the Venn diagram of people who play Dark Souls and people interested in board games has a fairly significant overlap. So of course Steamforged Games’ Dark Souls board game was always destined to make a bunch of money on Kickstarter. But I didn’t expect it to go quite this well.

Within three minutes, the UK-based team reached its funding goal of $70,000. We’re still technically in the first day of funding, and as of right now the pledges have reached $489,042. Since that takes the Kickstarter into stretch goal territory, the game will now see the addition of five new player classes (Pyromancer, Cleric, Sorcerer, Thief, Mercenary), a Gaping Dragon boss mode, and a Last Giant mega-boss. This is in addition to the Ornstein and Smough figures that Chris mentioned last week.

As one of the people in the aforementioned overlap, I’m excited. All I needed to read was this:

Each time you decide where to go, you will experience a new danger as you explore, with each new location a real risk to your hard-won progress. If you die, then you drop everything you have collected and reappear at the nearest bonfire. So do you return to the bonfire to rest and spend Souls to strengthen up, but in doing so fully reset the locations? Or do you press on and pray that the next encounter isn’t beyond your capabilities? After all, the next location may contain a clue to the Boss and how to defeat them…

Combat is both fast and deadly. Dark Souls™ – The Board Game rewards clever players and punishes ‘button mashing’. Players must learn enemy behaviors in order to fight more effectively, with classic fighting game style combat windows.

And see one of these cool figures:

Yeah, I’m in.
