We wonder if Punch-Out!!’s Piston Hondo is related to Piston Honda

A new contender found in the upcoming Punch-Out!! for the Wii has been revealed, and his name is Piston Hondo.

We have to wonder — is Piston Hondo related in any way to Piston Honda, well-known Japanese boxer of Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! fame? Well, both are from Tokyo, Japan. Both weigh 174 pounds, and while we don’t know the height of Piston Honda, we can assume he was in the 6’2″ range.

Despite the fact that Nintendo says Hondo was last seen in Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream (a.k.a. Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! with 100% less rape convictions), we’re not buying it. Evidence that Piston Hondo and Piston Honda are not the same is in the age. There’s no way that Piston Honda could be 28 today, the purported age of Piston Hondo. In the original title, he was 28… and that was some 22 years ago. Using mathematics, that would make Piston Hondo/Honda 50-years-old.

And that right there is why we’re not “pissed off” that Nintendo changed Piston Honda’s name… they’re clearly different characters. Duh.
