Watch this new Battlefront III footage and weep softly

For those who aren’t familiar with the tale of Star Wars Battlefront III, grab your midnight dust and gather around the campfire. Initially, reportedly in 2006, Free Radical Design (now known as Crytek UK) was tasked by LucasArts to develop a third entry to the widely successful Battlefront series.

In 2009, there were rumblings of a full cancellation of the project, for completely unknown reasons — rumors started to fly that Pandemic Studios was taking back developmental duties, but they quickly denied the claim. Some time later we learned that the real reason for the cancellation was because it was killed by Lucasarts “psychopaths”.

Fast forward to 2012, and we’re still fawning over the project. If you’re so inclined, nearly a full hour of new footage has surfaced for LucasArt’s ill-fated Battlefront III. One of the major features of the game was the ability to seamlessly fly starships from ground battles up into space on the same map.

As a Star Wars fan, I can’t help but wonder how this game would have turned out. Even if it was released to poor critical reception, I know that my friends and I would have played this into the morning light on more than one occasion. Oh well.
