Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium won’t release as an MMO

THQ has announced that Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium Online isn’t going to release as a massively multiplayer online game as originally expected. The title has been “refocused” as an “immersive single player and online multiplayer experience with robust digital content, and engaging community features.”

It sounds as if they’re making the best of a bad situation, and releasing something instead of nothing at all. THQ had previously been hoping to find a business partner for Dark Millennium, but president and CEO Brian Farrell says that “changing market dynamics and the additional investment required to complete the game as an MMO” makes this move the “right direction.”

The worst part about this is that Vigil Games has been reduced by 79 full-time employees, and Relic Entertainment has let go of 39 employees. According to THQ, the studios will continue working on Darksiders II and Company of Heroes / Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, respectively.
