‘Room-scale VR’

Valve’s public relations is so bizarre. Where most publishers will send over 1000-word hypertext press releases with screenshots and videos, Valve is keen to just give us four sentences in plain text. And we still write about it! Because Valve is Valve. Here’s the latest news from the PC juggernaut in its entirety.

Valve has announced plans to debut “The Lab,” a compilation of new VR experiments, at next week’s Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, CA. Set in a pocket universe of Aperture Science, “The Lab” offers multiple ways to enjoy room-scale VR. It will be offered free of charge via Steam this spring. More information will be made available next week at GDC.

Valve has been going in fairly hard on the virtual reality stuff lately, so it makes sense to incorporate one of its most beloved franchises. As a free title, The Lab is probably more of a proof of concept than anything else, collecting bite-sized experiences to show off what virtual reality is capable of providing.
