[Update: Oculus got in touch to stress that Vader Immortal is a “VR story series, not a game.”]

Coinciding with today’s news about Oculus Quest, the upcoming $400 all-in-one untethered virtual reality headset, there’s a new Star Wars experience on the horizon from ILMxLAB. Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series is a three-parter, with the first episode debuting in 2019 for the Oculus Quest.

The setup, at least for part one, is to head to the lava world of Mustafar to pay Darth Vader a visit and wield a lightsaber. That’s maybe enough? The story falls between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.

“You’re going to be able to really explore that place and, by extension, learn a lot more about Vader,” said writer and executive producer David S. Goyer. “I think the goal, also, was that we might able to [witness] some other depths to his character that might be difficult to experience in other mediums.”

It sounds like a bunch of people have had their hands on Vader Immortal. According to Mohen Leo, the director of immersive content at ILMxLAB, his team “worked in close collaboration with” Ninja Theory, Lucasfilm’s Advanced Development Group, Skywalker Sound, Epic Games, and Oculus.

A lightsaber-wielding experience for a wire-free VR device is a no-brainer. It’ll just come down to how extensive this story actually is and how the Vader Immortal series is split across three episodes.
