This upcoming survival horror title is giving Dead Space, Resident Evil, and The Thing vibes, and I’m here for it

This genre has been cooking lately.

What do you get when you combine the gameplay of survival horror titles like Dead Space and Resident Evil with a classic horror movie like The Thing? Well, it’s right here.

Comparing Cronos: The New Dawn to three of the most iconic names in horror is a big deal, but it’s not without reason. A new developer diary detailing the upcoming title’s gameplay has me more hyped for it than I already was, which is saying something.

In the new video, game director Jacek Zięba and lead combat designer Shamil Yanbukhtin of Bloober Team (Silent Hill 2 remake, Layers of Fear) went into detail on how the third-person shooter will play, and it’s impossible not to think of games like Dead Space and Resident Evil 4 when you see it in action.

But Cronos: The New Dawn adds its own wrinkle with its enemy type, reminiscent of ooze from The Thing, which requires a special kind of strategy to deal with. The monsters in the game don’t stay dead for long because they eventually merge to create something worse. And so, like in the Resident Evil remake, you need to burn their bodies to prevent it from happening.

In true survival horror fashion, though, resources will be scarce, so you will need to decide when to fight, when to run, or figure out another way to complete your objectives by using temporal anomalies to travel backwards and forwards in time. Basically, we’re in for a real trip.

Cronos: The New Dawn also boasts some incredible-looking environments, creepy and atmospheric, to further push itself into the discussion for the survival horror genre, which seems to be on fire lately. And Bloober Team is a big part of that, so it’s good to see the studio kicking off a new IP that looks so promising.
