UGO in talks to buy 1UP.com, GameVideos.com

We heard Twitter buzz last night, but the news comes out in full force this morning on Joystiq. They say that UGO Entertainment is in talks with Ziff Davis Media to buy up network sites like 1UP, GameVideos, and MyCheats.com.

The anonymous source says that the two companies are in “very advanced talks,” and that the 1UP staff were informed yesterday of the deal in a meeting. UGO execs may be flying out to meet the Ziff Davis staff as early as today.

UGO Entertainment Network wants some new web sites, but they’re not interested in purchasing either Electronic Gaming Monthly magazine or FileFront.com. Face! Kidding, but Joystiq says that Ziff has had trouble selling ads for the upcoming issues of EGM lately, pointing to a possible end for the long-running mag.

Not much else is known about the deal now. We’ll pass on more details as they come out.

Recently, lots of shifts in gaming news space have taken place. Lots of layoffs, too. I feel bad for my fellow game writers, and hope that they find new employment soon. This all makes me feel fortunate for the strong and steady growth of the independent outlet and network I work for. Viva Destructoid!
