Ubisoft shelves Division DLC in favor of fixing the core game

Update 1.4 coming in October

Ubisoft had a roadmap laid out for The Division‘s DLC, but it’s taking a slight detour. Rather than continue to release new content, the developers are taking a step back and fixing a few things before getting in any deeper.

In a post on The Division‘s site, Ubisoft says that it’s delaying the Survival and Last Stand add-ons in order to focus entirely on Update 1.4. Originally, this update was supposed to launch simultaneously with Survival, but that’s not the case anymore. Now, Survival will release “at a later date this year,” which pushes Last Stand out to early 2017.

As outlined by the developers, Update 1.4 is said to improve a lot of systems that are part of The Division‘s core gameplay. According to the post, these are: fixing bugs (including the ones that are listed as “known issues”); making loot drops more relevant to the player; enemy difficulty and time to kill; gear sets and weapon balancing; solo player experience; Dark Zone and PvP balancing; and quality of life additions based on community suggestions (such as weapon skins no longer taking up inventory space).

Persistent games like this need a constant trickle of content to keep players interested, but they also need to be up to snuff. The easy road would have been to keep getting the add-ons out there to fulfill the obligation to season pass holders, and then worrying about fixing the mess. This is the more admirable approach and also the one that’s best for the future of The Division.
