Turn-based XCOM title revealed, Firaxis developing

The cover story for Game Informer‘s February issue has finally revealed a turn-based strategy title called XCOM: Enemy Unknown (not X-COM). Firaxis Games, of Civilization and Sid Meier fame, will be developing this re-imagining of the classic strategy series.

No details yet on exactly how Firaxis is planning to bring the trademark PC gameplay to a “wider console audience,” but as the gaming mag mentions “destructible tactical environments” we can probably expect something a bit more modern than destroying tiles of walls and doors with explosive ordinance.

Firaxis’ Civilization Revolution on the consoles was as addictive as Civ was on the PC, and games like Tropico 3, Halo Wars, and various tower defense titles have proven that strategy controls can work on a console, so it’s going to be interesting to see how they will bring the classic X-COM gameplay to the multiplatform age. Is this what you hoped for, X-COM fans?
