Toad’s Tool 64: a Mario 64 level editor

Recommended Videos

Let’s get this out of the way: one can experience new ways to play Mario 64 with the newly-minted Toad’s Tool 64 level editor, which is to say one can utilize Toad’s Tool. Ah, the dick joke — where would Destructoid be without it?

Anyways, VL-Tone over at Qubed Studios — responsible for cubed-up versions of Mario, Metroid and Zelda — has released the first public beta of Toad’s Tool 64, a remarkably complicated (see above) level editor for Mario 64. Documentation is due in a couple of days, so those of us not quite intimate with the ways of level design and editing (me) will be better able to get a handle on things if we’re looking to make our own Mario 64 levels. In the mean time, there’s lots to play around with in the public beta.

With all of those wacky SMB hacks floating around the web, this seems to be a logical progression as intrepid ROM hackers press on into unexplored territory — how long do you guys suppose it’ll be before someone creates a damn-near impossible variation of Bob-omb Battlefield?

Keep an eye on the Qubed Studios blog for further updates, and download Toad’s Tool for Windows or Mac OSX here.
