Monstro Town is something of a hub for side quests in Super Mario RPG. In fact, you’ll find a side quest just by falling asleep. Three ghastly apparitions called the Three Musty Fears will appear, but they don’t want to haunt you. They have a little game to play instead.
The Three Musty Fears will place flags in places you’ve previously visited, and it’s your job to find each location. While you don’t have much to go off of, the three will give you some vague clues to help you out. They are as follows:
- Greaper: I hid my flag… behind a wooden flower.
- Dry Bones: My flag’s under a green bed.
- Boo: It’s between “O” and “A.”
You may look at those clues and have no idea what any of them actually mean. However, once you see where the Three Musty Fears want you to look, everything will make sense. That said, if you don’t feel like playing with their riddles, you can find each flag location below.
The flag behind a wooden flower in Super Mario RPG
To find Greaper’s flag, return to Rose Town. You’ll note that the welcome sign in front of you does, in fact, look like a wooden flower. Check behind it to find your flag.
The flag under a green bed in Super Mario RPG
Despite Mario’s red and blue overalls, he sleeps on a bed with green sheets that look more in line with his brother Luigi. While Luigi is mostly absent in this game, that doesn’t change the fact that this is the green bed Dry Bones was talking about. Look under it to grab the flag.
The flag between “O” and “A” in Super Mario RPG
Boo, the crafty ghost that it is, hid its flag in a technically optional area. Back on Yo’ster Isle, you might recall the race track that you may or may not have raced Yoshi down. Regardless of your performance, the letters spelling out “GOAL” are your key here. Just as Boo said, look between the “O” and the “A” to find this flag.
Return to the Three Musty Fears to get the Ghost Medal
With all the flags in hand, return to the bed in Monstro Town. The Three Musty Fears will congratulate you and award you with the Ghost Medal. This accessory doubles the equipping character’s defense, which makes it a great fit for characters you primarily want on healing duty (that is to say, Peach).
If you sleep in Monstro Town again, the Three Musty Fears will reappear and comment on whether or not Mario has the medal equipped. It doesn’t make a difference if he does or not, but you can see both outcomes for some extra flavor text. You’ll be happy to have this accessory once you take on some of the hardest content in the game!
