Best of 2012

Out of all of our nominee categories this year, discussion over our RPG category was the most heated by far. And it makes sense. Things looked rough for role-playing games for a few years, but now it’s one of the most varied and popular genres of games. From western to Japanese to massively multiplayer, RPGs are now fully in the spotlight. Feels good, right?

Narrowing the list down to five was one hell of a task, but a clear winner has emerged.

Here are the nominees for best RPG of 2012:

And the winner is …

Guild Wars 2

Some call it the second coming of MMOs. We’re just calling it our RPG of the year. This fresh, rewarding, innovative, and grind-free MMO is exciting enough that it pushed ahead of more traditional western and console RPGs in our voting. Easy to get into, even easier to get hooked on, wonderfully community driven, and incredibly beautiful to look at, Guild Wars 2 made veteran MMO players sit up and take notice, and even had novices jumping in.
