The Powerpuff Girls return in Defenders of Townsville

Coming soon to Steam

Powerpuff Girls: Defenders of Townsville is heading to Steam for Windows, Mac, and Linux on March 14, 2014. Huh? Where did this come from?

Radiangames, a developer known for its line of Xbox Live indie games, was in need of contract work last summer and pitched ideas to various companies, including Cartoon Network.

“It turned out that Cartoon Network would have a Powerpuff Girls special TV episode coming out in January, and [one of the pitches, a “Metroidvania+Defender game”] would be a great fit,” wrote Radiangames. “Just had to give it a little dose of Gunstar Heroes-esque mixed melee+shooting action to arrive at the final gameplay combination.”

Wild! The aforementioned special, The Powerpuff Girls: Dance Pantsed, featured a new art style (and Ringo Starr, amazingly enough). The art direction has been replicated in Defenders of Townsville, as shown in this trailer, however there’s an option for “classic” visuals.
