John Koller, director of hardware marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment America, told Gamasutra that the PlayStation 3 is still in its “early adopter phase.” Koller indicated that the “tech-oriented” consumer “interested in the multi-functionality of the system” composed the adopting legion. He must have forgot that the PS3 has been sitting on retail shelves for over two years.

To be fair, Koller’s interview was about the PlayStation 2’s enormous sales figures. In the last nine years 50 million PS2s sold in North America. Compare the PS2’s behemoth nine-year relevance and it becomes evident why Koller would say that the PS3 is in its infancy.

But that still doesn’t change the fact that Sony’s next-gen console has been on the market for years and hasn’t sold well. A month ago, the Wall Street Journal said that the PS3 wasn’t a valid “comeback player.” Perhaps that’s why Koller tossed out that “early adopter” phrase. There’s no need to make a comeback if you haven’t really started.
