The Foes of F.E.A.R 3: The Almaverse

Recommended Videos

This week, Destructoid is exclusively revealing the formidable cast of enemies that you’ll encounter in F.E.A.R 3. This horror-shooter sequel pits players against two distinct and deadly forces — the high-tech soldiers of the Armacham Military and the twisted freaks of the Alma Multiverse.

Yesterday, we met the Armacham forces, but today we have something a little more … nasty … to show you. Alma has been a busy girl since last we saw her, and she now has an entire reality full of grotesque and grisly playthings to send your way.

These are the malformed monstrosities of the Alma Multiverse, and you get your first look at them right now.

Scavenger:

Eternally hungry and vicious to boot, the Scavenger is one of the most animalistic foes you’ll encounter, but that doesn’t mean they’re stupid. Despite their aggression and need to feed, they’ll work together in packs to snuff out prey. It only takes one to spot you before a whole crowd of like-minded nasties surround your position.

Scavengers take it in turns to harass their victims, co-ordinating hit-and-run attacks on the player. So, make sure you don’t get surrounded, and take them out one by one.

Creep

If one thing can be said about the Creep, it’s that the name is fitting. This may very well be the most disturbing enemy ever seen in a F.E.A.R game, and I think I love it.

The Creep can only truly be seen in the reality forged by Alma, where she has created these fiends to reflect her own twisted view of humanity. In the real world, they are only briefly glimpsed as brief staccato flashes, which is pretty merciful considering what the things actually look like.

This horror gets in close to attack with its twisted maw, exploiting the fact that it cannot be properly seen by mortal eyes. It only briefly manifests in the real world to verify its enemy’s location. Obviously, that’s a good time to confirm its suspicion of your whereabouts by sticking a bullet in its brain. If it has a brain.

Cultist

Not everybody in Fairport was killed when the nuke destroyed the town at the end of F.E.A.R. Unfortunately, they may have wished they were. The survivors have had their brains infested by Alma’s consciousness and went mad due to the psychic energy that now impregnates the area. They are constantly assaulted by images of Alma’s tortured past and fragments of a grisly future, which has understandably driven them to the point of axe-happy insanity.

Chief among the survivors are the cultists. Devoted to Alma in their own twisted way, these psychopaths lie in wait to ambush the player, though they don’t seem the patient type and often attack early enough to give you a fighting chance. They close the distance with Approach attacks, and finish the job with Close attacks. You want to drop them before they do either.

Cannibal

Oh sure, because the crazy cultists with letters carved into their chests weren’t freaky enough, let’s have ones that eat people. Cannibals are ambush attackers like their Cultist counterparts, but they don’t stick around for a fair fight once the trap is sprung. Once they land a hit, they’ll quickly dart away to try and repeat the assault. No, it’s not fair.

Some Cannibals will even hide in piles of dead bodies to jump out at the player in what I like to call the “Dead Body Douchebag Maneuver.” You’ll also have to be wary of the ones that carry knives — they’re not afraid of throwing them.

Which concludes our look at the foes of F.E.A.R 3. Hopefully you’re a little more prepared before the game’s May 24 launch date.
