The best stuff on Destructoid this week [7/26]

I’m a messy water drinker

Recommended Videos

Let’s get away for the weekend, just you and me. I know this little place on the coast. Nice restaurant, view of the water from the cliff side. We could probably sleep in the car in the parking lot and hang out on the beach all day.

Here’s last week’s post. Let’s begin anew.

[We post a lot of articles here at Destructoid. The endless, ouroboros news cycle has us burning the snake at both ends, which will ultimately push big news, thoughtful original pieces, and all sorts of other great content off of the front page. Check here every Saturday for my attempt to rectify that.]

ORIGINAL CONTENT

Now’s a nice time to buy a Wii U: Here’s everything you should know – Steven Hansen

This part is harder than you might think. First, you need a job, under the table or otherwise — just some source of income (note: if you are genealogically wealthy, feel free to skip this step!). I know what you’re thinking: A job? In this economy? Be prepared to work harder than you should for less than you deserve. Doing so dutifully, without violent outbursts or unionizing, will see you repaid with varicose veins, ulcers, and a meager stipend which can be exchanged for goods and services. One such good is a Wii U, of which there are different types.

Anticipation Simulator 2015 pushed back to 2016 – Max Scoville

Most of us were looking forward to the release of Anticipation Simulator 2015 next fall, so it comes as quite a letdown to hear it’s been delayed. This morning, Logjam Studios sent out a rather longwinded press release in which project lead Philip Bustier made the disappointing announcement.

Smash Bros. 4: Hopes, Fears, and Predictions – Jonathan Holmes, Patrick Hancock

Patrick Hancock and I decided to approach this article from strictly a fan’s perspective. We loveSmash Bros. We think about it everyday. Getting those thoughts out of our brains felt good, and we hope it feels good for you to read about them.

Hardline 25: EVO highlights, Tekken 7 is real, and oh so much Fire Emblem in Smash – Steven Hansen, Jordan Devore, Brett Makedonski, Hamza Aziz

But it was Smash Bros. that got me, Hamza, Steven, and Brett the most fired up this week as Lucina, Robin, and Captain Falcon were revealed. We also talked about two upcoming not-MOBAs, Battleborn and Gigantic. Find out which is a “yay” and which is a “nay.”

Hardline 26: Do we even want another Last of Us? – Jordan Devore, Steven Hansen, Brett Makedonski, Bill Zoeker

Electronic Arts has delayed not one but two of its major games originally planned for October 2014 — Dragon Age: Inquisition is being held back until November, while Battlefield Hardline is now set for early 2015. In this week’s episode of Hardline, Steven, Brett, and Bill joined me to discuss that decision, the Destiny beta, and Naughty Dog’s comments about how not considering a sequel toThe Last of Us “would be a disservice [to the studio and its fans].”

What’s Up? Our panel at PAX Prime 2014, Far Cry 4, Destiny Beta, Vietnam & a ferret – Max and Bill

Max and I thought it would be a good idea to keep everyone posted on our goings-on. This was spurned by many, many people wondering why we’ve been filming in Max’s actual kitchen. We answer this question, and some y’all haven’t even thought of yet.

PREVIEWS

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel’s new Stingray vehicle, Athena breakdown, and smart guns? – Bill Zoeker

I got my hands on Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel recently, and I’ve got some hot info on the new mechanics, and one of the new player characters, Athena the Gladiator. The game’s new Stingray vehicle has a neat trick to it, there may be smart-targeting laser guns in this new iteration, most importantly, Athena is definitely a badass.

Fantasy Life is one of the easiest simulators ever to pick up and play – Chris Carter

Even though I didn’t get to play it for long, it’s clear that Fantasy Life is a huge game. Odds are you’ll spend over a hundred hours maxing out every job, not to mention the side distractions like multiplayer, customization, and room decoration. I can’t wait to try the full version for myself later this year.

To dye for: Invisible Inc. is my kind of strategy-stealth game – Steven Hansen

In the alpha build that’s been out this year, Cheng said the “only way [he] can play it is by using exploits the normal player won’t know about.” This current build, rejiggered from the alpha testing, looks fantastic. Invisible, Inc. will be coming to Early Access next month, sans final boss, in an effort to keep iterating on player feedback and getting the balancing just right. Me, I’ll probably wait until the final release. When it comes, though, I have a feeling it’ll be one of my favorite games this year.

HOTTEST, SLIMIEST NEWS OF THE WEEK

Those new Smash Bros. mystery characters are Lucina and Robin from Fire Emblem – Chris Carter

The new fighter was revealed to be none other than Lucina from Fire Emblem: Awakening. But wait, there’s more! Robin from Fire Emblem is also in, and he has a female gender swapped costume!

BioWare’s ‘Nightmare’ teaser trailer is unexpected – Jordan Devore

BioWare sent emails to fans overnight that include a “Nightmare” teaser trailer for what appears to be a new intellectual property. The video is live action, so it’s hard to say what this will be other than “Hey, the guy with the head made of smoke was kinda cool.”

There’s also a website which hints at a gamescom reveal: “The time is near. They are watching. Your power is rising. Cologne, Germany. You’ve Been Chosen.”

Ciao, amiche.
