Atari has made the decision to delay the release of Eden Games’ Test Drive Unlimited 2 to early 2011. The developer says the new date will allow additional time to polish the title, the multiplayer experience in particular.

“By moving the title’s release date to early 2011,” says Eden Games studio manager David Nadal, “we will be able to further advance the game and take into account consumer feedback to help ensure we deliver a great online lifestyle racing experience.”

And what about that promised beta? It’s still coming, but will be rescheduled accordingly. If you’ve already signed up and have been waiting patiently, you’ll get a free in-game item for your troubles. Eden says it will be announcing a new date for the beta in the coming weeks.

To be honest, it’s probably best for Atari and Eden to push Test Drive Unlimited 2 out of the already crowded 2010. Quality notwithstanding, it would be hard to go head-to-head with big names like Gran Turismo 5 and Criterion Games’ Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit. Racing fans already have plenty to look forward to this year, and now early 2011 is looking even sweeter.

Anyone upset by the delay, or are you happy to wait for a more polished experience?
