If you like blasting aliens to bits in dark corridoors, then one of today’s Xbox LIVE Arcade releases, Alien Breed Evolution, is for you.
The game has an “old school” feel, almost immediately reminding me of the PlayStation One title, Loaded. You move with the left stick, and aim your weapons with the right, pulling the right trigger to blast the slimy critters that crawl out of vents to eat off your face. The first area has you searching (by holding “A”) lockers and dead bodies for ammo and gear, and navigating the dark hallways of a crashed space station to power it up again.
Alien Breed Evolution looks pretty damned solid for an Xbox LIVE Arcade game (it uses Unreal Engine 3.0), and it’s straight-forward control scheme is easy to pick up. Ten minutes into the game there isn’t much thinking, but there’s plenty of explosions and a decent alien body count. What more can you really ask for?
It’s hard to say if the 800 MS Points price tag is worth it, as I don’t know how long the experience is going to last. It does feature a cooperative assault mode separate from the story, and at the very least, feels like a high quality experience.
If you’ve been playing Alien Breed Evolution (which is also set to hit PlayStation Network and PC next year), let us know what you think.
[Note: The action starts around 3:20 second, if you want to skip the comic book style opening storyboard and get right to it.]
