Tekken 7 is still going strong as it hits five million copies sold

Harada is happy

Tekken 7, which was released back in 2015 on arcades, mind (before hitting consoles in 2016), has been selling like hotcakes pretty much since it hit the scene.

It’s become a staple of EVO and helped put Tekken back on the map, hosting all sorts of crazy crossover characters like Akuma, Geese Howard, Walking Dead’s Negan and Final Fantasy XV‘s Noctis. Yeah, it’s kind of wild. The game doesn’t seem to be showing any signs of slowing down, as co-director and Tekken boss Katsuhiro Harada just reported today that the game has sold five million copies: a one million sale increase from the number we had in mid-2019

In true Harada form, he frames the tweet in the sense that he “completely missed” the milestone that was actually achieved “by the end of 2019” during the New Year holiday. He explains that the company needs time to give us a new commemorative illustration.

For those of you who haven’t been following along, Tekken 7 got a major update last December, and the character Fahkumram is slated for a spring 2020 release. Tekken 7 isn’t my most-played fighter right now, but it does get play: make no mistake about that. I’m glad the series is still alive and kicking, as Tekken 2 and Tekken Tag Tournament had a major impact on my formative years as a fighting game fan.
