This Doom 2 mod adds the iconic “Toasty!” line from Mortal Kombat

Nostalgia vs nostalgia.

Nothing fills my blackened heart with gaming joy more than seeing relics of the past remain steadfast in this modern era. In this case, I’ve found a mod for Doom 2 that scratches that nostalgic itch with its implementation of a classic Mortal Kombat voice line.

In “Toasty! for Doom,” ModDB user MilHouse.wad has brought the iconic announcement to id Software’s legendary shooter. While playing the game, it’s possible to have sound programmer Dan Forden announce his famous “Toasty!” line while battling hell demons. Certainly a fitting combination.

This is an obvious nod to the original Mortal Kombat game released in 1992, in which Forden’s avatar would appear in the corner of the screen at certain points during a bout. It was glorious.

“Excellent!”

According to MilHouse.wad, in order to get him to utter his famous “Toasty!” line, you’ll need to gib an enemy. So basically, just run around with a rocket launcher or the Berserk power up. Will the novelty wear off? Only time will tell.

We’re unlikely to see the end of Doom and Doom 2 modding any time soon. And why would we want that? If people stopped tinkering with these FPS classics, we’d never get to see all the beautiful things people can do with the formula, such as make the game run on a toothbrush.

The original games remain an absolute triumph, paving the way for the first-person shooter genre. I realize some people are sick of hearing that, but now you know how your parents feel when they try to tell you how important the Beatles were.
