Tales from the Borderlands behind the scenes video vaguely answers a question about Handsome Jack

Yes, Handsome Jack is dead

Back when Tales from the Borderlands was first announced at last year’s VGX, one of the questions that came up was, “Wait, why is Handsome Jack in the trailer if this occurs after the events of Borderlands 2? Shouldn’t he be dead?” At the end of the video above, Gearbox writer and former Destructoid ranter Anthony Burch hints at Jack’s involvement in this new story, saying “Handsome Jack is dead and he’s not coming back, but there are contingencies.”

Otherwise, the video discusses the relationship between Gearbox and Telltale in producing the upcoming series, with an emphasis that Tales from the Borderlands is a Telltale-developed game set in a Gearbox-created universe.

Fan favorite Randy Pitchford says about Tales from the Borderlands, “The decisions that I’m making as a player actually affect the outcome of the story.” With all of the talk about how the studio does not have a clear vision for what Borderlands 3 would be, and the almost-lamentations in the interviews above about the limited range of interactions in the main series games, I can’t help but wonder if the next entry will take a more nonlinear approach to storytelling. Could be a neat idea to explore.
