Sweet background music: Spotify on PS4 is a worthwhile addition

Out today under the PlayStation Music banner

Depending on who you ask, Spotify is a good to awful music streaming service. I’ve stuck with it for years and don’t have too many complaints. The new PlayStation Music initiative, which is powered by Spotify and replaces Sony’s own Music Unlimited service, is out now for PS3 and PS4.

Spotify is $9.99 per month, or free if you can put up with advertisements and other annoyances. New users can score a month-long trial, and former Music Unlimited subscribers with accounts active as of March 29, 2015 can claim two months of free premium access.

The PS4 app allows you to play music in the background while gaming and you can easily adjust the volume, pause the track, or skip a new one by holding down the PlayStation button. Optionally, you can also control Spotify on your console using a smartphone or tablet. No pausing!

I tried it out with Bloodborne — that disc just isn’t leaving my console — and it worked well enough.
