Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars. That’s a game title. Honest.

It’s hard to imagine anybody stringing these words together in this order and making it the title of a videogame, but truth is indeed stranger than fiction. Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars, a PSN title from Psyonix Studios, falls into the equally bizarre genre of “arena-based online vehicle sports.”

What the video seems to portray is the long dreamt of fusion of demolition derby and soccer. Cars come equipped with boosters that can launch them into the air to perform all manner of aerial stunts and attempt to drive an oversized ball into a goal. The game will feature team and league play online in addition to a single-player mode and a selection of mini-games.

It’s strange, but it also looks kinda cool. The whole thing reminds me of playing the Pong mod for Quake II back in the day, merely replacing lumbering guys with huge guns for super-fast cars with jump-jets. A little under the radar in a time of big releases but, if it manages to take off and develop a following, this could be a pretty fun title.

Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars releases for PSN on October 9th. Does it appeal to you or do you think this is a pass?
