Super Smash Bros. Ultimate amiibo listing hints that you can unlock fighters early with figures

They’re supposedly easy to unlock anyway

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is doing things a little differently when it comes to character unlocks. While we don’t know the exact process, Smash boss Masahiro Sakurai has confirmed that it will be easier in general. According to information gleaned from a recent amiibo product listing, it’ll be as easy as tapping a figure to your Switch (or controller).

Best Buy Canada just put up new information on its storefront: “Access a whole new level of fun and smash the competition with this Super Smash Bros amiibo. A former fighter in Andross’ army, the Wolf now leads his own mercenary team, and he’s not one you want to cross. Simply tap the amiibo accessory to the NFC touchpoint on your game system to unlock this Space Pirate.”

Previously amiibo were used in Smash 4 as a means to train fighters (something Nintendo calls “sidekicks”) and unleash them in multiplayer games as AI. They’ve seemingly expanded that process, which may or may not extend to the entire unlockable roster. We’ve reached out to Nintendo for confirmation of this feature.
